It all started in February 2017 (nearly a year ago today), I discovered a low fare for direct service from JFK to BGI with Jetblue. I did a little research and found the island was not only beautiful but relatively safe for solo female travelers. My resources concluded I should not be on any deserted beaches or other deserted/desolate areas at night (DUH). The only notable concern other than that was we can't wear Camo print (LOL). At first glance, Barbados was an ideal place to regroup, relax and figure my life out.I was super excited about my first solo trip and second passport stamp to a lovely Caribbean Island.
I arrived to jfk around 5am for my 7:13am flight, breezed thru security and before I knew it I was landing at BGI. I had a feeling in my bones it was about to be LIT! I retrieved my baggage and headed to duty free, the prices are GREAT. I purchased a bottle of white henny and pumped it thru customs, soon enough the warm sun was kissing my skin. Once outside, I glanced around and saw a bunch of taxis but i didn't want to get duped so i decided to ask a Bajan about the cost prior to. I walked up to a airport security guard who was talking to a pretty lady, she was dressed to the nine's in a flowy white dress and silver sandals. I excused myself and politely asked how much it should cost to get to Tropical Winds in Long Bay, St Phillips, the lady removed her glasses and said, that's where she was going! She started asking me questions in her heavy british accent, she wanted to know where i was from, who i was there to see, before i knew it we we're talking like we knew each other forever. Her name was Paula, she was from London, however lived in Barbados for several years. She was building a little business for herself and with her knowledge of the island, she decided to freelance as a tour guide. I was lucky enough to meet her on her way to drop a couple off to the airport!
Paula asked if I wanted to eat and hang out or if i wanted to go straight in, of course I was starved! She took me to a spot right outside the airport, Pugs Bar and I knew the food was great because i could smell the inticing aroma as soon as i stepped out the car. The line was pretty long, but during the wait Paula began to explain how she knew the owner personally, and that she once taught her son in grade school. She said that Pug's was one of the best spots in Barbados to eat, so I considered myself LUCKY. The place was crowded and clean, the service as polite and the food was absolutely delicious. We also got free drinks because my new friend is so well connected ! So far so good!
After grabbing a tray Paula was set on taking me around the island insisting it was very small and that we can basically drive around the entire island in about an hour. It sounded like a great plan, so I went with it.
